Please join SWIMBA at Gardiner Peak on Sunday, September 19 for the official opening of the Mahalo Trail and dedication of the Nick Raganit Memorial.
The event will include a tour of the memorial site, group rides, and a barbeque.
The Mahalo Trail is named in honor of Nick Raganit, an outdoor enthusiast, mountain biker, and fellow SWIMBA member who died on June 16, 2007, while participating in the annual Boise to Idaho City mountain bike ride. For those of you who did not know him, Nick was a fixture in the Boise outdoor community – biking, hiking, climbing, and generally lending his support to others. He worked at REI, both in sales and as a belayer on REI’s climbing wall, and he also worked with kids on the YMCA’s climbing wall. He was kind, generous, fun to be around and, it seemed, always smiling. His usual greeting or farewell was “Mahalo” – a Hawaiian word meaning gratitude, respect, praise, blessings.
The Mahalo Trail is SWIMBA’s premier trail. Designed by the SWIMBA trail crew and built entirely by hand with an investment of over 2000 volunteer hours, the trail winds through the trees on Gardiner Peak. While it is open to all non-motorized trail users, the trail crew designed the trail with mountain biking in mind, with bermed corners and sweet, technical singletrack. We could not think of a more fitting tribute to our friend Nick than naming this beautiful trail in his honor.
We will meet at the Highlands Elementary School off of Bogus Basin Road at 9:30 AM on Sunday, September 19, and shuttle up the mountain. For those of you who wish to drive, take Bogus Basin Road up to FS Road 275. Turn right on FS 275, and follow it until you come to FS 275D. Turn left on 275D and into the parking area. SWIMBA will provide brats, burgers, and liquid refreshments. Please feel free to bring a side dish or something to throw on the grill.
We hope to see you there. Mahalo!
